St. Patrick's Week Celebrations March 11-17 |
St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland is still commemorated here in memory of the
Irish settlers and Montserrat's Irish heritage. March 17th is also notable as the day on
which the island's slaves staged a revolt and marched on Government House.
From March 11-18, the week-long festival is centered in the village of St. Patrick's with masquerades,
jump-ups, street theater and music, a "slave feast" and the Freedom Run.
The Irish connection is emphasized by the wearing of the green, the shamrock, and the singing of
Irish songs.
